(Being Thankful)

In the Bible, we are encouraged  In every thing give thanks….”  or in the Message version of the Bible “Thank God no matter what happens…”  (1 Thess 5: 18); we, as true Christians, have much to be thankful for.  However, there are times when this is easier said than done and when tragedy or illness hits, we are occasionally tempted to be bitter; it’s all in our ‘tude – our attitude.  The Lord gave us illustrations in Scripture where the circumstances were not always conducive to a thankful attitude, yet we see God’s true followers take everything in stride; the strongest example of this is Job (study # 198).

Also, the Word of God gives samplings of another kind of attitude of thankfullness; an attitude of unworthiness.  In 1 Chronicles 29:13 - 15, we read 13  Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. 14  But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.  15  For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.”  David’s attitude here is excellent because these were the final words that he spoke to his people and they were just after he appointed his son, Solomon as king of Israel in his place.  Although David’s desire to build a dwelling for God was not fulfilled, he was more than happy to leave this significant task to Solomon; no bitterness, just thankful unworthiness.  David went to be with the Lord not long after these words were spoken.
